SENIOR HEALTH PROGRAM
The
senior service program is very important for newly immigrated elderly
Asians. Information on Social Security benefits, recent Medi-Cal reform
as CalOPTIMA in Orange County, affordable housing, etc., is provided
through educational seminars, individual consultation, and/or
information and referrals, giving Asian seniors the know-how to obtain
services and health care.
Health care is one of the most important issues concerning the elderly.
AASCSC conducts preventative healthcare seminars quarterly. A health
fair, sponsored by the Chinese Physicians and Dentists Association, has
been held annually for the last several years. The health fair brings
health awareness to seniors. A series of Medicare benefits seminars
have been scheduled since April 2001 in collaboration with HICAP. Tai
Chi groups are also active.
The majority of elderly Asian immigrants experience some measure of
deprivation when they come to the United States, such as the loss of
their language, culture, even their capability and identity. A support
group was formed to offer seniors an opportunity to cope, by sharing
their feelings of loss and learning with each other. The topics shared
in the support group also cover family relationships, transportation
needs, and some personal issues. English and computer classes for the
elderly have been provided monthly.
Various cultural and recreational activities are also conducted at
AASCSC. The Chinese Opera Club and Singing Club each meet twice a
month. The Chinese New Year Celebration is held annually. Day trips are
arranged monthly to provide seniors a chance to have fun, and to
socialize to overcome loneliness. They not only maintain their cultural
ties, but it helps them to adapt easier in their new environment.
Supportive home care – providing personal care and domestic
services, is another service AASCSC plans to develop in the near
future. We have seen the needs for taking care of older parents at
home, which is a tremendous burden to immigrant families with limited
resources and support. We feel AASCSC is an organization where the
Asian elderly and their families can solve their problems and enjoy
socializing during the later years of their lives.
Our objectives are:
1. To provide and collect information on Social Security
benefits, Medicare, recent Medic-Cal Reform, affordable housing, and
various health care issues are provided through educational seminars,
individual consultation, and/or information and referrals.
2. To provide a series of Medicare benefits seminars have
been scheduled since April 2001 in collaboration with HICAP. |
