COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

As a community-based organization, the Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center (AASCSC) is always sensitive to the needs of the Asian community in general and draws on essential information and programs to serve the population of all ages. The AASCSC Newsletter is published monthly.

During the past years, AASCSC has developed a Citizenship application service to assist qualified immigrants complete applications with help in filling out forms, picture taking, and fingerprinting by certified staff. Since July 1998, AASCSC has participated in an outreach effort to help low-income Asian families apply for Medi-Cal and assist in Healthy Families application, the low cost comprehensive health insurance offered for children under age 19. The California Department of Health Services sponsors this program. We also assist our members in applying for electricity, gas, and rent assistance.

Committing to health care for the community is another concern of AASCSC. With funding from the California Department of Health Services, AASCSC conducted a two-year tobacco control education program with the Chinese community, from 1992 – 1994. In 1995 – 1996, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society of Orange County, AASCSC was involved with cancer prevention and education efforts for the Chinese population in Orange County.

AASCSC is also interested in advocacy for the Asian community as the need arises. During the past years, the United States House of Representatives proposed bills relating to the social welfare qualifications of new immigrants, which could cause hardship not only for Asians but other ethnicities as well. AASCSC joined the alert action to raise the concern and action within the Asian community and channeled the voice through national Asian organizations to the House of Representatives.

We are challenged at AASCSC to respond and endeavor to overcome all problems should they arise, affecting the well being of the senior citizens in our Asian community.

Our objectives are:

1. As a community-based organization, AASCSC is always sensitive to the needs of Asian community & draws on essential information and programs to serve population of all ages.
2. we are committed to serving Asian Americans in our community to improve their life & quality of living by responding and overcoming all obstacles that may arise.
