CANCER CONTROL PROGRAM

In August 2000, assisted by University of California, Irvine (UCI) and Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA), AASCSC launched a project with The Orange County Korean American Health Information and Education Center (OCKAHIEC) in the development of culturally relevant and community-based solutions to address the need for cancer control in the Chinese and Korean communities in Orange County. Funded by The California Endowment and Irvine Health Foundation, this one-year planning grant will develop community coalition in Orange County, identify and plan interventions to address cancer control within the Chinese and Korean community. The planning project is taking place through activities aimed to coalition building and leadership development to long-term improved health outcomes for the affected communities.

The Chinese coalition organized by AASCSC, consists of a group of Chinese professionals from diverse fields. It has been meeting regularly since September 2000 and created a vision to build and sustain a healthy Chinese community.

The objectives of the project are:

1. To reduce cancer incidence by promoting cancer awareness, prevention and early detection through community education
2. To increase early detection of breast, cervical, colorectal and/or prostate cancers via screenings in order to reduce cancer mortality
3. To provide treatment/end of life support to diminish suffering for patients and families affected by cancer
4. To empower the community by training bilingual volunteers/health educators to serve in the areas of education, screening coordination, referral service, and patient service
5. To continue on building the cancer control capacity and linking social resources and community assets in Orange County.
